Man Arrested for Alleged Murder in Clermont: Details of the Case Unfold

A man from Clermont was arrested on Saturday for allegedly shooting and killing another man in May, as reported by the Clermont Police Department. Kirby Alan Smith, 33, was taken into custody in connection with the first-degree murder charge related to the May 20 homicide. The victim, Michael Rodriguez, 47, was found with multiple gunshot wounds at the Linton Court residence where he had been staying for several weeks. Rodriguez was pronounced dead at the scene, and the suspected murder weapon, an AR-style pistol, was recovered by officers.
Smith claimed self-defense during his interview with the police, stating that he acted in response to a verbal altercation with Rodriguez earlier that day. Despite the lack of witnesses or evidence contradicting Smith's claims at the time, an extensive investigation followed, involving interviews, search warrants, and subpoenas. Detectives eventually obtained an arrest warrant for Smith on the charge of first-degree murder.
The Clermont Police Department collaborated with the Mid-Florida SWAT Team and the State Attorney’s Office for the Fifth Judicial Circuit during the execution of the arrest warrant and throughout the investigation. Smith was taken to the Lake County jail for processing following his arrest. The case is still under investigation, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
