Colony" Reigns Supreme at the South Korean Box Office: Weekend Recap Jun. 12–14

The South Korean box office was dominated by the action-horror film "Colony" over the weekend of Jun. 12–14. Directed by Yeon Sang-ho, the movie follows a group of individuals trying to escape a mall overrun by a viral outbreak. With $2 million in revenue and over 301,000 admissions, the film has now crossed the 5 million mark, earning a total of $36.3 million since its release in mid-May.

In second place was the retro music comedy "Wild Sing," which brought in $1.3 million from 205,104 admissions. The film tells the story of the comeback journey of the late-1990s dance trio Triangle. Since its launch on June 3, it has accumulated $5.5 million in total revenue from 869,724 tickets.

Steven Spielberg's sci-fi thriller "Disclosure Day" debuted in third place, earning $827,660 from 112,387 admissions over the weekend. Including its preview screenings, the film has made a total of $1.3 million so far.

"Backrooms" secured the fourth spot with $780,517 in revenue, bringing its total earnings to $6.8 million from 976,071 admissions. The musical biography "Michael" followed in fifth place, adding $195,151 to its local earnings, which now stand at $11.5 million from 1,589,033 tickets.

"The Supernatural Sweet Shop" landed in sixth place, making $113,633 over the weekend and reaching a cumulative total of $955,883. Kore-eda Hirokazu's Cannes competition film "Sheep in The Box" debuted in seventh place, earning $98,878 from 15,848 tickets. The movie explores the emotional journey of a couple who receive a humanoid infant robot resembling their late son.

"The Mandalorian and Grogu" took the eighth spot with $99,020, bringing its total earnings to $1.6 million. A re-release of "Sing Street" by John Carney came in ninth place, adding $56,465 to its lifetime gross of $3.1 million in South Korea. The anime "Dear My Hero" rounded out the top 10, generating $18,175 from 5,500 admissions. Based on the game MapleStory, the animation follows a novice recruit named Aidan in the Cygnus Knights.

The weekend's overall box office revenue was $5.4 million, showing a decline from the previous week's $9.1 million. Despite the decrease, the South Korean box office continues to see steady activity.
