Capital Punishment Pursued for Afghan National Accused of National Guard Member's Murder
Prosecutors in Washington D.C. have announced their intention to pursue the death penalty for Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national accused of killing a National Guard member and severely injuring another. Lakanwal, 29, faced additional charges in federal court that could lead to his execution if found guilty. The charges stem from the fatal shooting of West Virginia National Guard Army Spc. Sarah Beckstrom and the critical injury of US Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe in November 2025. Lakanwal, appearing in court in a wheelchair and orange jumpsuit, was charged with 17 counts, including first-degree armed premeditated murder and attempted murder of three others.
Armed with a stolen revolver, Lakanwal allegedly ambushed Beckstrom and Wolfe near the Farragut West Metro Station, shooting them both in the head. The charges against him also include assault with intent to kill, transportation of a firearm across state lines, and discharge of a firearm during a crime of violence. Lakanwal, a former Afghan special forces soldier who came to the US as a refugee, could face the death penalty if convicted of the murder charge. He was apprehended by two National Guardsmen after the attack, during which he was shot and stabbed. Lakanwal had traveled from Washington state to DC with the stolen gun to carry out the assault.
Initially indicted on murder, assault, and gun charges that did not carry the death penalty, prosecutors sought additional charges to increase the potential for capital punishment. Beckstrom, who volunteered to work on the day of the incident so that her colleagues with families could celebrate the holiday, tragically passed away the following day, Thanksgiving. Lakanwal has maintained his plea of not guilty throughout the legal proceedings.
