John Michael Unrein, 46, was driving a red Mazda3 westbound when it crossed the center line and collided with an eastbound white Chevrolet Equinox driven by Gina Mae Nix, 51. The impact caused the Chevrolet to roll over, while the Mazda3 continued and hit a red Hyundai Elantra driven by Laura Valent Reales Gutierrez, 23. Unfortunately, Unrein was pronounced dead at the scene, while Nix and her passenger were unharmed. Reales Gutierrez sustained minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The Oregon State Police responded to the crash and conducted an on-scene investigation, which led to a four-hour closure of the highway. The Lane County Sheriff’s Office, Lane Fire Authority, Lane County Medical Examiner’s Office, and the Oregon Department of Transportation provided assistance during the incident.
