Mubi is set to release a remake of the iconic 1980s horror movie, Maniac Cop, with director Nicolas Winding Refn at the helm. The first key-art poster for the film has been revealed, featuring a striking crucifixion-like image. Refn, who is also producing the film through his NWR Originals banner, has been working on the project since 2016. Originally planned as a miniseries at HBO, the Maniac Cop remake has now been reimagined as a movie following the Warner Bros. Discovery merger. The plot details are being kept secret for now, but Refn has expressed his excitement about the project, stating that the concept of Maniac Cop resonates in today's political and social climate. The original cult classic, directed by William Lustig, followed a vengeful ex-cop in New York City and featured a star-studded cast. Mubi is financing the project and will handle its North American distribution, with plans for a wide theatrical release.
