Warning: Rise in Violent Crimes Linked to Pokémon Card Sales in Laval

The Laval police have issued a warning about a rise in crime related to the sale of Pokémon cards, with incidents turning violent. They have already apprehended 10 suspects in connection with multiple incidents, four of which involved the sale of the popular collector cards. Pokémon is a game where players use character cards to battle. Transactions initiated on Facebook Marketplace for the sale of cards or laptops have escalated into violent confrontations in person, with thieves, some armed with pepper spray, stealing the items without payment.
Since January 2025, the Laval police have documented 30 incidents associated with the sale of Pokémon cards, 11 of which occurred since March 2026. Seven of these incidents involved violence, with victims being assaulted with pepper spray. Between June 9 and June 11, the police arrested 10 young men aged 16 to 18 in connection with these incidents. Some were released pending court appearances, while others were detained. The suspects are facing charges such as robbery, assault, and possession of criminally obtained goods.
To ensure safety, the police advise potential sellers of Pokémon cards or any other items to meet buyers in controlled zones that are well-lit and equipped with surveillance cameras. It is also recommended not to attend the transaction alone.
