Close Encounter: Surfer's Scary Shark Encounter Off Santa Cruz Coast

A man in California had a scary encounter with a shark while surfing off the coast of Santa Cruz. Drone footage captured the moment when the shark approached the surfer near Seascape Beach in Aptos. The surfer seemed unaware of the shark's presence until it started circling him, prompting him to paddle back to shore quickly. The drone operator, Nick Bertocchini, used the drone to alert the surfer, known as "Rex," by revving its motors. The surfer, who grew up surfing in the area, mentioned seeing more sharks near Seascape Beach in recent years.
The incident took place on June 10, and Bertocchini shared the video on his Instagram page. He described the shark's behavior as more investigative than usual encounters he has witnessed. Fortunately, the shark and the surfer parted ways without any further interaction. While shark sightings are not uncommon along the California coast, shark bites are extremely rare, according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
In conclusion, the surfer's close encounter with the shark off the coast of Santa Cruz serves as a reminder of the marine predators' presence in the area. Despite the rare occurrence of shark bites, surfers and beachgoers should remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings while enjoying the ocean.
