Emergency Update: Pocket Fire Prompts Evacuations and Highway Closure in Oak Creek Canyon

A wildfire erupted in Oak Creek Canyon, rapidly expanding to approximately 100 acres on Friday afternoon, prompting immediate evacuations and the closure of a major highway north of Sedona. The Pocket Fire, which started around 5 p.m., is currently uncontained. State Route 89A has been shut down in both directions between the north end of Sedona and Fort Tuthill, with no estimated time for reopening.

The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office issued a mandatory evacuation order for all visitors and residents in Oak Creek Canyon between Sedona and Forest Highlands. This includes individuals in dispersed camping sites around West Fork, as well as visitors to the End or Edge of the World area and nearby locations above the Rim. Travel down Woody Mountain Road (Forest Road 231) is strongly discouraged at this time.

Firefighters are employing a direct extinguishment and full suppression strategy to contain the fire and prevent further spread. Resources dedicated to the fire response include two Hotshot crews, five engines, one bulldozer, and various overhead personnel, with additional resources en route. Motorists are advised to steer clear of the area and find alternative routes.
