Help Ava: A Mother's Plea for Life-Saving Surgery

Ava, a 23-year-old battling median arcuate ligament syndrome (MALS), is in need of life-saving surgery. Her mother, Jennifer, shared the emotional toll of watching her daughter suffer from this rare and debilitating condition. Ava's days are spent in bed, receiving nutrition through a catheter due to severe gastrointestinal and vascular complications.

The illness began when Ava was diagnosed with gastroparesis at age 16, leading to repeated hospitalizations and sepsis. The family is facing financial challenges as their insurance carrier has denied claims for the out-of-state surgery at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. They need at least US$400,000 to cover the surgery, air ambulance, continued care, and other expenses.

Jennifer, who also suffers from health issues, has been managing the situation while her husband, Barron, works as a defensive backs coach for the Calgary Stampeders. The family's income is solely dependent on Barron's job, as Jennifer had to quit her job as a personal trainer. Despite the challenges, Barron praised his wife for holding the family together during this difficult time.

Former CFL coach Wally Buono started a GoFundMe campaign to support Ava's surgery, raising nearly $58,000. The Montreal Alouettes have also offered financial assistance to the family. Jennifer expressed the difficulty in seeking help but acknowledged that they have exhausted all resources, including selling their car and downsizing.

The family is grateful for the support received and hopes for a miracle to help Ava undergo the life-saving surgery. The community's rallying efforts have provided a glimmer of hope during this challenging time.
