Ron Francis Joins Pittsburgh Penguins as Special Advisor, Hockey Operations

The Pittsburgh Penguins have appointed Ron Francis as Special Advisor, Hockey Operations. In this new role, Francis will support the team's hockey operations leadership group in strategic planning, roster construction, and optimizing internal systems and processes. He will provide expertise during key events such as training camp, the NHL Draft, trade deadline, and free agency, while also assisting with minor league operations and player development.
Francis, 63, brings a wealth of experience to the Penguins, having most recently served with the Seattle Kraken organization for seven seasons. During his time with the Kraken, Francis played a key role in building the team from scratch, overseeing the hiring of the hockey operations department, the construction of their practice facility, and the selection of their inaugural NHL roster via the expansion draft.
Prior to his tenure in Seattle, Francis spent 12 years in management with the Carolina Hurricanes, where he held various roles, including Executive Vice President and General Manager. He was instrumental in acquiring key players through the draft or trades that contributed to the Hurricanes' 2026 Stanley Cup Championship team.
As a player, Francis enjoyed a remarkable 23-year career in the NHL, playing for teams like the Pittsburgh Penguins, Carolina Hurricanes, Hartford Whalers, and Toronto Maple Leafs. He is a two-time Stanley Cup champion, a winner of the Selke Trophy, three Lady Byng Memorial Trophies, and one King Clancy Trophy. Francis ranks fifth in NHL history in regular-season scoring and is one of only 50 players to score over 500 goals in their career.
Recently elected to the Pittsburgh Penguins Hall of Fame, Francis brings a unique blend of playing and management experience to his new role with the Penguins. His deep connection to the city of Pittsburgh and the Penguins organization makes him a valuable addition to the team's front office as they strive to build a perennial Stanley Cup contender.
