Michael Dyck Returns: Vancouver Giants' New General Manager and Head Coach

The Vancouver Giants are on the verge of appointing former head coach Michael Dyck as their new general manager and head coach, according to sources within the WHL. Dyck, who led the Giants to the league championship series in 2019, recently left the team to join the Toronto Marlies as an assistant coach. After three seasons with the Marlies, Dyck helped them secure the Calder Cup league championship. The Giants had approached Dyck last year for the same dual role but couldn't reach an agreement at the time.
Following a disappointing season where the Giants missed the playoffs for the first time in several years, changes were inevitable. The team's previous GM and coach were let go, leading to the recruitment of Hnat Domenichelli and Parker Burgess. However, after a lackluster performance, both Domenichelli and Burgess were relieved of their duties in April. Dyck's return to the Giants will mark his fourth stint with the team, having previously served as an assistant coach and in player development roles.
Dyck's ties to the Lower Mainland remain strong, with his family residing in the area. His daughter even works for the Giants as a marketing and advertising assistant. With a successful track record during his previous tenure with the Giants, Dyck's return is expected to bring stability and a fresh perspective to the team. The upcoming season will be crucial for the Giants as they aim to bounce back from their recent setbacks and regain their competitive edge in the Western Conference.
