Legendary Collaboration: The Rolling Stones' Foreign Tongues Album Featuring Steve Winwood and More

The Rolling Stones are set to release their new album, Foreign Tongues, on July 10, featuring guest appearances from Steve Winwood, among others. Winwood, a legendary English keyboardist and songwriter, has a long history with the Stones dating back to the '60s. Keith Richards recalls their early connection and how it has evolved over the years.

Initially approached for a quick cameo on a track, Winwood's involvement in the album expanded as he was asked to play on multiple songs. The Stones recognized a parallel between Winwood and Nicky Hopkins, another pianist who had worked with them in the past. The collaborative process on Foreign Tongues involved all musicians playing together, creating a vintage Stones vibe.

Mick Jagger revealed that Winwood plays piano on the track "Jealous Lover," the second single from the album. Other notable guests on Foreign Tongues include Robert Smith, Paul McCartney, and Chad Smith. While a tour for the new album seems unlikely, Keith Richards expressed interest in a residency-style performance that would involve less travel.

In the meantime, Steve Winwood is gearing up for a series of live shows with John Fogerty starting in September. The tour will kick off in Tinley Park, Illinois, on September 3 and conclude later in the month. This tour follows previous performances by Winwood, including a run of shows in 2024 where he opened for the Doobie Brothers. It has been almost two decades since Winwood's last studio album, Nine Lives, was released.
