Netflix Animation Studios: A New Era of Animated Content

Netflix has made significant changes to its executive team, highlighting the growing importance of animation. Hannah Minghella, previously in charge of feature animation and live-action family films, will now focus solely on animation as the head of Netflix Animation Studios. She will oversee a vast slate of projects, three animation studio facilities, and over 1,000 employees across three continents. Meanwhile, Kira Goldberg, the vice president of film, will take over the live-action family films portfolio, in addition to her current responsibilities for thrillers, dramas, and faith-based stories.
The shift in leadership reflects Netflix's emphasis on animation, which has proven to be a lucrative venture for the streaming platform. Recent successes like KPop Demon Hunters and Swapped have demonstrated the popularity of animated content on Netflix. The upcoming lineup includes a diverse range of projects, such as Steps, Ray Gunn by Brad Bird, The Buried Giant, a sequel to The Mitchells vs. the Machines, and In Waves. Notably, Netflix is also planning an animated adaptation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in 2027.
In addition to expanding the animation slate, Minghella will focus on developing animated franchises across various divisions, including live events and consumer products. She will also continue to oversee her live-action projects, such as Greta Gerwig's Narnia and Eloise starring Ryan Reynolds. Goldberg, who has experience in family-oriented projects, has already worked on successful films like Remarkably Bright Creatures and The Life List.
Minghella and Goldberg bring their expertise to their respective roles at Netflix, with Minghella joining the company in 2024 from Bad Robot and Goldberg in 2018 from 20th Century Fox. These strategic changes in leadership underscore Netflix's commitment to expanding its animation offerings and creating engaging content for audiences worldwide.
