Police Shooting Incident During Foot Pursuit Near Campus Martius Park in Detroit

A Detroit police officer shot a person during a foot pursuit in downtown Detroit. The incident occurred near Bates and Farmer Streets close to Campus Martius Park. Police officers noticed a group of young men carrying a heavy backpack, which was later found to contain a conversion-type assault weapon. One of the individuals fled, prompting a chase through an alley. The officer felt threatened and fired multiple shots, injuring the person being pursued, who is in critical condition and approximately 18 years old. Another individual in the group, who is about 19 years old, was also involved in the incident. The officer was unharmed. Despite the shooting, there is no danger to the public, especially with the Ford Fireworks event happening that evening.
