Rediscovered: The Beatles' Historic Top of the Pops Performance from 1964

The Beatles' first-ever appearance on Top of the Pops in 1964 has been rediscovered in its entirety. The performance, which took place on March 19, 1964, at the BBC's Television Theatre in London, featured the band miming to their songs 'Can't Buy Me Love' and 'You Can't Do That' a day before the songs were released as a single. The recording of this historic performance was initially stored in the BBC archives but was later erased, as was common practice at the time.
Despite the existence of grainy and distorted clips from the Beatles' Top of the Pops appearance, a complete and clean copy of the footage was thought to be lost forever. However, a British conservation non-profit organization called Film Is Fabulous! recently announced that they had acquired a 35mm film containing the Beatles' entire performance, including their banter and interactions.
The 35mm film, which was obtained from the family of a deceased former industry professional, showcases the Beatles performing four takes of 'Can't Buy Me Love' and two attempts at 'You Can't Do That'. The footage also captures behind-the-scenes moments, such as the studio, technicians, and make-up ladies. The Beatles can be seen joking and dancing during breaks, adding a lighthearted touch to the performance.
Film Is Fabulous! plans to restore the original 35mm film of the Beatles' Top of the Pops appearance and return it to the BBC archives. While the exact release date for the public to view the footage is unknown, discussions are underway to ensure that the content is made available to a wide audience. This rediscovered footage offers a unique glimpse into a significant moment in Beatles history and is sure to delight fans of the iconic band.
