Operation Red Card: Rhode Island Crackdown on Human Trafficking Surrounding 2026 FIFA World Cup

Law enforcement authorities in Rhode Island have apprehended 13 individuals as part of a crackdown on human trafficking and exploitation surrounding the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Rhode Island State Police unveiled the outcomes of "Operation Red Card," which aimed to target individuals allegedly involved in commercial sex acts, child exploitation, and other illicit activities related to human trafficking. Authorities highlighted the potential for traffickers to take advantage of major international sporting events, despite the economic and cultural benefits they bring to host cities.
Among the suspects facing charges related to human trafficking is a 60-year-old man from Johnston who was arrested for procurement of sexual conduct for a fee. While the Johnston man was remanded without bail, five other individuals were released on personal recognizance. Additionally, FBI Boston disclosed the arrest of seven Massachusetts residents in ongoing efforts to combat human trafficking and the sexual exploitation of children in connection with World Cup matches.
The Massachusetts residents arrested have been charged with engaging in sex for a fee with a child under 18, enticement of a child under 16, and attempted rape of a child. Authorities urge anyone with suspicions of human trafficking to report them to the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888 for confidential assistance.
