The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (KVIFF) is celebrating its 80th anniversary and 60th edition this year. The festival, known for hosting Hollywood celebrities, also recognizes and honors prominent Czech stars. This year, the festival will present its President's Award to Magda Vášáryová, a renowned Slovak actress who has become a respected ambassador and voice in political circles. The festival aims to honor her exceptional performances and acknowledge the artistic connection between Czech and Slovak filmmakers that has shaped the cinematic history of both countries.

Magda Vášáryová, known for her intelligence in selecting roles and her profound emotional depth in portraying characters, is praised by KVIFF's artistic director, Karel Och. Her versatility as an actress and her transition into a respected politician highlight her remarkable career. The festival looks forward to her presence and acceptance of the award, recognizing her as a special individual who bridges the world of cinema with other cultural realms.

Vášáryová gained recognition for her breakthrough role in František Vláčil's historical drama "Marketa Lazarová" in 1967. The film, considered a cinematic masterpiece, tells the story of a feudal lord's daughter who is kidnapped before joining a convent. Despite not initially aspiring to be an actress, Vášáryová's success in "Marketa Lazarová" led to further acting opportunities, establishing her as a prominent figure in Czech and Slovak cinema.

In addition to her acting career, Vášáryová starred in Karel Zeman's adaptation of Jules Verne's novel "Off on a Comet" in 1970. Her portrayal of Angelika, a character who saves a French cartographer from Spanish captors, showcased her talent in diverse roles. Beyond her acting achievements, Vášáryová served as an ambassador to Austria and Poland, demonstrating her commitment to politics and public service.

As part of the 60th edition of KVIFF, audiences can witness Vášáryová's performance in Juraj Jakubisko's 1969 film "Birds, Orphans and Fools" featured in the Out of the Past classics program. The film, which had a delayed premiere due to censorship, explores the lives of three orphaned individuals navigating a harsh and violent world. Vášáryová's personal introduction of the film adds a special touch to the festival's celebration of her contributions to cinema and society.
