Aquamarine: A Magical Teen Fantasy Series Coming to Disney+

Disney+ has greenlit a pilot for Aquamarine, a new series inspired by the 2006 teen fantasy romantic comedy starring Emma Roberts. The project is a collaboration between Roberts, the original film's director Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum, and producer Susan Cartsonis. The pilot will be written by Sarah Watson, the creator of The Bold Type. Roberts will also make a guest appearance in the series, reprising her role as Claire Brown.

The story follows Coral, a teenager who moves to a picturesque seaside town and uncovers the truth about her mother's disappearance. She learns that her mother was a mermaid, and Coral herself develops magical powers just as mysterious secrets from the depths of the ocean threaten to emerge.

The 2006 movie, loosely based on Alice Hoffman's YA novel, starred Roberts as Claire, alongside Joanna "JoJo" Levesque and Sara Paxton. The film follows the adventures of teenage friends Claire and Hailey as they befriend a mermaid named Aquamarine, who promises to grant them a wish if they can prove the existence of true love by winning the heart of a local lifeguard. Aquamarine has since gained a cult following.

Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum, who made her feature directorial debut with Aquamarine, has gone on to work on various TV shows like Ginny & Georgia and Dead To Me. Emma Roberts, known for her roles in American Horror Story and Scream Queens, will also star in the upcoming films Hal and The Technique. Sarah Watson, the creator of The Bold Type, has worked on projects like Percy Jackson and Parenthood.

Aquamarine promises to bring a fresh take on the beloved teen fantasy story, combining elements of magic, friendship, and self-discovery. Fans of the original film and newcomers alike can look forward to diving into this enchanting world when the series premieres on Disney+.
