Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers: Celebrating 50 Years of American Rock Music

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, the Tom Petty Estate has released extended and newly mixed versions of the iconic songs "American Girl" and "Breakdown" through Gone Gator Records. These tracks have been remixed from the original multi-track tapes in hi-res and Dolby Atmos, providing fans with a fresh way to enjoy two songs that have been synonymous with the band for half a century. Recorded in 1976 at Shelter Brown Room Studio, "American Girl" was born on July 4th, a fitting start for a song that has become a cornerstone of American rock music.

"American Girl" is widely regarded as one of the greatest rock songs ever written and continues to top streaming charts every Fourth of July, showcasing its enduring impact on American culture. The new mix of the song was recently featured in a Major League Baseball celebration of the U.S. Semiquincentennial, highlighting its resonance with America's pastime. Fans can also enjoy an extended version of "Breakdown," the band's first Top 40 hit and debut single. Known for guitarist Mike Campbell's distinctive riffs, "Breakdown" has evolved into one of the band's most recognizable tracks from their early days.

Both "American Girl" and "Breakdown" are featured on Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers' self-titled debut album, which is marking its 50th anniversary this year. The album remains a standout debut in rock history, showcasing the band's fully formed sound from the start. Throughout his illustrious 40-year career, Tom Petty solidified his status as an American rock and roll icon, celebrated for his songwriting and his band, the Heartbreakers. In addition to the 13 studio albums with the Heartbreakers, Petty released three solo albums and was part of the supergroup Traveling Wilburys and the pre-Heartbreakers band Mudcrutch.

Tom Petty's legacy as one of the greatest rock music artists is evident in his induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and multiple Grammy Awards. With over 85 million records sold, five billion streams, and performances for over 140 million fans worldwide, Petty's impact on the music industry is undeniable. Recognized for his philanthropy, Petty received prestigious awards such as Midnight Mission's Golden Heart Award in 2011 and MusicCares Person of the Year in 2017. The Petty Estate continues to honor his legacy by supporting causes that were dear to Petty's heart.

Following his passing in 2017 after the 40th Anniversary Tour, Tom Petty left behind a treasure trove of unreleased material, ensuring that his music lives on for generations of fans worldwide.
