Remembering the Cast of 'Newhart': Where Are They Now?

"Newhart" is a classic sitcom from the 1980s that followed the adventures of author Dick Loudon and his wife Joanna as they managed the Stratford inn in Vermont. The show introduced memorable characters like handyman George Utley, maid Stephanie Vanderkellen, and the eccentric brothers Larry, Darryl, and Darryl. The series concluded with a famous twist that revealed it was all a dream.
William Sanderson, who played Larry, was known for his role as one of the quirky brothers. Beyond "Newhart," Sanderson had a successful career with notable appearances in films like "Blade Runner" and TV shows like "True Blood" and "Deadwood." He released an autobiography in 2019 and retired from acting in 2020 after his final role in "Deadwood: The Movie."
Tony Papenfuss, who portrayed one of the silent Darryls, also had a successful career post-"Newhart." He appeared in films like "Escape from New York" and "Firefox" before returning to TV with roles in "Seinfeld," "Murphy Brown," and "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine." Papenfuss continued to work steadily in the 2000s and 2010s, with his most recent role in the 2021 TV movie "Breakdowns."
John Voldstad, the other Darryl on "Newhart," enjoyed his time on the show and continued to act in various projects after its conclusion. He appeared in TV shows like "Home Improvement" and films like "Forrest Gump" and "Leprechaun." Voldstad later worked at the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Alabama and expressed his willingness to return to acting if the opportunity arises.
