Empowering Asian Filmmakers: The Asian Cinema Fund's 2026 Edition Unveiled

The Asian Cinema Fund has revealed the 12 projects chosen for its 2026 edition, offering support to filmmakers in Asia for script development, post-production, and documentary production. Operated by the Asian Contents & Film Market, the fund caters to various production stages and provides opportunities for networking with industry professionals.

Out of 798 submissions, the 2026 edition selected three script development projects, two post-production projects, and seven documentaries. These projects, representing seven primary production countries and including international co-productions, delve into themes such as identity, migration, historical memory, family relationships, care, conflict, and coexistence.

The Script Development Fund aids independent Asian feature projects in their planning stages, providing financial support and networking opportunities at the 2026 Asian Project Market. Projects like "Babak" and "Bon Voyage" explore themes of survival, identity, responsibility, care, grief, and personal obligations.

The Post-Production Fund supports Korean independent feature projects after principal photography and editing, offering assistance with digital intermediate color grading, sound mixing, English subtitles, and DCP production. Projects like "Not for You" and "Some Detective" focus on personal grief and self-discovery, with plans for world premieres at the 2026 Busan International Film Festival.

The Asian Network of Documentary Fund backs independent feature-length documentary projects for theatrical release, providing financial support and industry exposure. Projects like "Floating House," "Tongues of Fire," and "We Are Volcanoes" tackle themes of diaspora experiences, national reckoning, justice-seeking, and personal and community histories.

The selected projects aim to bring diverse stories to the screen using various techniques like animation, archival footage, reenactments, and photography. The Asian Cinema Fund bridges project development with completion, presentation, and international industry exchange, fostering the growth of Asian cinema.

Recipients of the Script Development Fund will engage in meetings at the Asian Project Market, while Post-Production Fund selections will receive technical support before premiering at BIFF. Documentary projects will be showcased to industry representatives through Doc Square and other ACFM programs, enhancing their visibility and potential for international recognition.

The 21st Asian Contents & Film Market is scheduled for October 10-13, 2026, at Exhibition Center 2 of BEXCO in Busan, coinciding with the 31st Busan International Film Festival from October 6-15.
