From The Fables to Fatboy Slim: Norman Cook's Musical Odyssey

Norman Cook, also known as Fatboy Slim, developed a passion for music at a young age, inspired by The Rolling Stones' album Black And Blue. Before rising to fame as a renowned DJ with millions of album sales, Cook achieved UK number one hits with his bands The Housemartins and Beats International. In a recent interview on BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs, Cook revealed a childhood belief that his uncle was a member of The Beatles.

During the late '60s, Cook's uncle Dennis played in a band called The Fables, who rehearsed in his grandmother's living room in London. Young Norman was captivated by their rehearsals of Beatles songs like Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds and Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da. Mistakenly thinking the radio version was his uncle's band, Cook humorously recalled his friends' confusion when he claimed his uncle was in The Beatles.

In a surprising turn of events, Cook later found himself living next door to Paul McCartney in Brighton. Despite McCartney's friendly demeanor, Cook couldn't shake the surreal feeling of having a Beatle as a neighbor. McCartney's casual visits to Cook's kitchen in Speedos left Cook in awe, always humming Beatles tunes in his head during their interactions.

During his Desert Island Discs appearance, Cook selected Beatles' Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End from Abbey Road among his eight chosen tracks. He also picked songs by The Clash, Underworld, Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, Donna Summer, Taj Mahal, Bobby Charles, and The Muppets to accompany his imaginary stay on a desert island.
