UK Government Considers Intervention in Paramount Skydance Corp's Acquisition of Warner Bros Discovery: Potential Impact on Media Freedom and On-Demand Programming
Britain is considering intervening in Paramount Skydance Corp's proposed acquisition of Warner Bros Discovery due to concerns about media freedom and on-demand programming. This potential intervention could lead to a review by the country's anti-trust regulator, following a similar case involving Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard in 2023. While the deal has been approved in several other countries, including the United States and China, the UK government is focusing on its potential impact on British assets, such as Channel 5, CNN International, TNT Sports, Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, Paramount+, and HBO Max. Culture minister Lisa Nandy has set a deadline for the companies to respond, after which she will decide whether to issue a formal public interest intervention notice, triggering reviews by Ofcom and the Competition and Markets Authority. If concerns are identified, the companies may need to offer remedies to address them, such as divestments or commitments to protect editorial independence.
