Edmonton Oilers Trade Darnell Nurse to San Jose Sharks: Details and Analysis

The Edmonton Oilers have completed a trade with the San Jose Sharks, sending defenseman Darnell Nurse to San Jose in exchange for defenseman Shakir Makhamadullin and a prospect. The Oilers did not retain any money in the deal. This trade follows Nurse's request to be moved out of Edmonton earlier in the year. Nurse, who is 31 years old, had a productive season with seven goals and 24 points in 82 games, averaging over 20 minutes of ice time per game. In the playoffs, he played over 23 minutes per game in six appearances as the Oilers were eliminated in the first round. Nurse is in the fifth year of an eight-year, $74 million contract with an annual cap hit of $9.25 million and is set to become an unrestricted free agent after the 2029-30 season. Drafted by the Oilers in 2013, Nurse has accumulated 88 goals and 324 points in 798 career games. He played a key role in the Oilers' back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals appearances in 2024 and 2025, contributing five goals and 14 points in those playoff runs. Additionally, Nurse has represented Canada at the World Hockey Championship three times, earning a silver medal in 2019.
