Joel Paterson Joins Bob Dylan's Band: A Blues Guitarist from Chicago Takes the Stage

Bob Dylan recently made some changes to his band lineup, with guitarist Bob Britt leaving and Joel Paterson stepping in to fill the role. Paterson, a well-known blues guitarist from Chicago, made his debut with Dylan's band on June 29 in Austin. Prior to joining Dylan's band, Paterson had a weekly residency at the Green Mill Cocktail Lounge in Chicago with his jazz quartet.
Paterson's familiarity with Dylan's music was evident as he had previously played pedal steel on some of Dylan's songs for The Cactus Blossoms' Bob Dylan Songs Vol. 1 EP. In addition to his work with Dylan, Paterson is involved in other projects such as The Joel Paterson Quartet and The Western Elstons. He has also collaborated with artists like JD McPherson, Kelly Hogan, Pokey LaFarge, and Deke Dickerson.
Following Bob Britt's departure, his wife clarified that it was not due to Julian Lage, who briefly filled in for him at a show. Lage will continue to play with Dylan when his schedule allows. It seems that Lage will be present at most shows, except for one in July. Guitar World reached out to Joel Paterson for a comment on his new role with Dylan's band.
In conclusion, Joel Paterson has seamlessly transitioned into his role as a guitarist for Bob Dylan's band, bringing his blues expertise and Chicago roots music background to the stage. Fans can expect to see more of Paterson alongside Dylan in the coming shows, as he continues to impress with his musical talents.
