Exploring Desire and Visibility: My Friend the Porn Star Documentary

Austrian filmmaker Rosa Friedrich has created a unique documentary called My Friend the Porn Star, which blurs the lines between documentary filmmaking and the world of pornography. The film, produced by Kacerovsky, will premiere at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. The story follows Rosa's friend Timo, who wants to star in an "artistic erotic film," leading Rosa to document the process and explore themes of desire and visibility.
As the film's shooting date approaches, Timo becomes hesitant and withdraws from the project, prompting Rosa to continue with the film using AI technology to replace Timo's face. The film evolves into a collective experiment involving a dominatrix, trans women, a food-porn creator, and other characters, exploring themes of desire, visibility, and the fear of being seen. The participants in the auditions for Timo's film also grapple with curiosity, self-determination, and doubt, reshaping the film together.
The film features a diverse cast of characters, including Alice Moe alias Eric Big Clit, each bringing their own vision of eroticism to the project. Through a mix of playful enactment and intimate documentary, the film constantly reinvents itself, reflecting the diverse perspectives of its protagonists. Director Rosa Friedrich was initially surprised to find herself involved in a porn film project but was drawn to the contradiction of the desire to be seen and the fear of judgment.
When Timo drops out of the project, Rosa decides to anonymize his footage with AI and continue the film as a collective process shaped by the castings' participants. The film becomes an exploration of visibility, shame, and self-protection, inviting viewers to think differently about these themes. The trailer for My Friend the Porn Star offers a glimpse into Rosa and Timo's exploration of what people find sexy, promising a thought-provoking and humorous film experience.
