Studio Ghibli's Iconic Films Coming to U.K. and Ireland: Gkids Distribution Deal

Gkids has acquired the distribution rights for Studio Ghibli's 23-title film library in the U.K. and Ireland. This includes theatrical, home video, TV, and digital rights across the territory. The release kicks off with an Imax screening of "Kiki's Delivery Service" on August 21. The catalog features acclaimed films like "Spirited Away," "Howl's Moving Castle," "My Neighbor Totoro," and more. Many of these films have had limited availability in the region for some time.

Future Imax releases are already planned, including "The Secret World of Arrietty" and "Whisper of the Heart." Gkids will also release new 4K Ghibli remasters starting in fall 2026, along with a re-release of the full library on home video platforms. In the U.K. and Ireland, Gkids will collaborate with Anime Limited, a distributor recently acquired by Gkids' parent company Toho Global. They have previously worked together on releases like "Arcane" and "Perfect Blue."

The agreement was brokered by Eric Beckman at Gkids and Vincent Maraval at Goodfellas, Studio Ghibli's global sales agent. Gkids has been handling Ghibli distribution in North America, while Goodfellas retains streaming rights for the U.K. and Ireland. Gkids President David Jesteadt expressed excitement about bringing these iconic films to audiences in the U.K. and Ireland, while Vincent Maraval of Goodfellas also shared his enthusiasm for the partnership.

Studio Ghibli, founded by Miyazaki Hayao, Takahata Isao, and Suzuki Toshio, has received critical acclaim, including two Academy Awards for best animated feature. The studio was honored with an Honorary Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. The Imax release coincides with the expansion of "Kiki's Delivery Service" into a live-action television series, based on Eiko Kadono's novels, in collaboration with BBC Studios Kids & Family and Wheel in Motion.

In conclusion, Gkids' acquisition of Studio Ghibli's film library for the U.K. and Ireland marks an exciting opportunity to reintroduce these beloved films to audiences in the region. The partnership with Anime Limited and Goodfellas will ensure a comprehensive distribution strategy for these iconic works, further solidifying Studio Ghibli's legacy in the international market.
