Managing Sidewalk Damage in Kitchener: Heatwave Effects and City Response

The recent heatwave in a Kitchener neighborhood has led to sidewalks expanding and cracking, as seen in photos shared with CTV News. The city explained that high temperatures can cause sidewalk slabs to buckle or heave due to material expansion. Interventions like barriers, cones, or paint may be needed, and in some cases, the affected area may require replacement.

Similar incidents occurred in June 2025 in Waterloo, Kitchener, and Cambridge, where sidewalks also buckled under the heat and humidity. The slabs were either repaired or replaced to address the issue. While the current heatwave is ending, southern Ontario is not expected to see much relief in the coming week, according to Environment Canada's predictions.

Residents experiencing sidewalk issues can report them by contacting 519-741-2345 or visiting Kitchener.ca/contact. The city will assess the situation and take necessary actions to address any sidewalk damage caused by the extreme heat.
