Extreme Weather Disrupts 250th Birthday Celebrations Across the United States
Severe storms and a heatwave disrupted the 250th birthday celebrations in the United States, causing power outages for hundreds of thousands of utility customers. Record-breaking temperatures hit the Northeast, while thunderstorms in the Midwest led to downed trees and power lines, affecting transportation in multiple states. A powerful storm hit the New York area, leaving many without power during a heatwave, with temperatures reaching 98 degrees in Central Park.
Atlantic City, New Jersey, experienced its highest July temperature at 105 degrees, contributing to strong storms with wind gusts up to 70 mph in places like Perth Amboy, New Jersey. Nearly 1 million residents in Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York, and New Jersey were left without power due to the storms. Crews from 12 states and Canada were dispatched to Michigan to assist with restoration efforts.
The severe weather forced several cities to cancel holiday festivities and reschedule fireworks displays. Mayor Frank Velez of Belleville, New Jersey, postponed celebrations to the following year for safety reasons. Annapolis, Maryland, and Philadelphia also had to alter their Fourth of July events due to the extreme weather conditions. Despite the cancellations, celebrations in Washington, D.C., were expected to continue as planned.
The extreme heat also led to health emergencies, with a 79-year-old woman requiring medical attention at a fireworks event in Philadelphia. In Washington, D.C., the Independence Day Parade was canceled due to the high temperatures. President Trump praised the patriotic crowds in D.C. and was scheduled to deliver remarks at the event later in the evening.
The scorching temperatures persisted on July Fourth, with Washington, D.C., and parts of the Northeast experiencing triple-digit heat. Tragically, a family outing on Geneva Lake in Wisconsin turned fatal when their boat capsized during a storm, resulting in the deaths of three children. Despite rescue efforts, the children did not respond to lifesaving measures, leaving the community in mourning.
