Hijamat": A Family Drama of Secrets, Struggles, and Self-Discovery premieres at Karlovy Vary International Film Festival

The highly anticipated family drama "Hijamat" will have its world premiere at the 60th edition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. The film, directed by Nader Saeivar, was produced and edited by his long-time friend and collaborator Jafar Panahi. Saeivar, who left Iran during the filming of another project, will be attending the premiere without Panahi, who had to return to Iran due to passport issues and legal troubles.
"Hijamat" follows the story of Murad, played by Kida Khodr Ramadan, as he navigates the challenges of protecting his younger brother Kerem, who is gay, within their deeply religious Muslim family in Berlin. The film delves into themes of family, secrets, and personal struggles, with a stellar cast that includes Nicolette Krebitz, Aziz Capkurt, Moritz Bleibtreu, and Nastassja Kinski.
The title of the film, "Hijamat," refers to an ancient therapeutic practice known as wet cupping, which is used for pain relief and detoxification. Saeivar shared his inspiration for the film, highlighting the importance of addressing personal and societal issues to bring about change. The film reflects his own journey of self-discovery and shedding outdated beliefs, mirroring the themes explored in "Hijamat."
Saeivar's personal experiences and reflections on rigid beliefs and societal norms are woven into the narrative of the film. Through the character of Murad, the film challenges the audience to confront their own beliefs and barriers to change. Despite being set in the Turkish community in Berlin, the film's themes resonate on a universal level, emphasizing the need for introspection and liberation from mental constraints.
The choice of Kida Khodr Ramadan as the lead actor was strategic, as Saeivar aimed to connect with the Arab and Turkish community in Berlin through Ramadan's popularity and talent. The collaboration between Saeivar and Panahi, despite the latter's absence at the premiere, remains strong, with the two filmmakers maintaining a close relationship and supporting each other's work.
As "Hijamat" prepares for its world premiere, Saeivar's message of self-exploration and breaking free from mental barriers resonates with audiences worldwide. The film serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of questioning beliefs, embracing change, and seeking personal liberation.
