Highlights from the Munich International Film Festival 2021: Award-Winning Films and Audience Favorites

The Munich International Film Festival (MIFF) recently concluded, with Kosovan director Visar Morina’s film "Shame And Money" winning the €15,000 award for best international film in the CineMasters competition. Morina’s film, which premiered at Sundance and is handled by The Yellow Affair, received critical acclaim. Chinese writer-director Jing Zou’s debut feature "A Girl Unknown" won the €10,000 prize in the CineVision competition, exploring the life of a young Chinese woman across three decades. The film, handled by Pyramide International, premiered at Cannes and received accolades.

Nicolas Graux and Minh Quý Trương’s documentary "Hair, Paper, Water…" won the main prize in the CineRebels competition, shedding light on traditions and vanishing cultures. Trương, a previous CineRebels Award winner, showcased his work at MIFF. Italian director Margherita Spampinato’s debut feature "Sweetheart" won the €3,000 CineKindl Award, capturing family dynamics in Sicily. Tom Schreiber’s "Beautiful Souls" and Sol Iglesias SK’s "The Swimmers" received recognition at the festival, with the audience awards going to "Agnes & Amir" and "If Only The Year Had 364 Days."

The festival attracted over 95,000 visitors to 385 screenings and 140 events, marking a 5% increase from the previous year. Festival director Christoph Gröner expressed delight at the strong turnout and audience engagement, emphasizing the festival's commitment to showcasing new films and fostering a spirit of discovery.
