Vancouver Extends Granville Street Pedestrian Zone and Patios Post-FIFA World Cup
The FIFA World Cup may be coming to an end in Vancouver, but the city's Granville Street Pedestrian Zone and temporary patios inspired by the event will continue through the Labour Day long weekend. Vancouver City Council has decided to extend the pedestrian zone between Georgia and Davie streets, creating a vibrant pedestrian-friendly area with fewer vehicles and more outdoor seating options for locals and tourists alike.
Originally introduced as part of the FIFA World Cup celebrations, the pilot project has transformed Granville Street into a lively destination filled with patios, public events, and a reduced presence of buses and cars. The extension allows restaurants, pubs, and other hospitality businesses with temporary patio approvals to keep their outdoor spaces open until September 6, providing them with an opportunity to benefit from the summer tourism season for a little longer.
The province aims to support hospitality operators in maintaining revenue post-World Cup while enhancing outdoor dining experiences, fostering community gatherings, and promoting local tourism. Mayor Ken Sim emphasizes the positive impact of putting people at the center of the city, noting the increased energy on Granville Street, higher customer traffic for local businesses, and the desire of residents and visitors to sustain this momentum.
While the possibility of making the car-free initiative permanent is still under consideration, the city plans to gather data on pedestrian activity, transportation patterns, business performance, public safety, and feedback from the community throughout the summer. An online public survey is available for residents to share their thoughts until September 7, contributing to the evaluation process.
In addition to exploring the potential for a Christmas market in November with a reinstated pedestrian zone, the city will continue to monitor the operational and economic impacts of the pedestrian-friendly initiative. Robson Street at Granville will remain closed to vehicles, while Georgia and Davie streets will stay open to ensure cross-city access. Intersection closures may be implemented on busy days to manage crowds effectively.
As summer continues, Granville Street will offer ample space for leisurely strolls, people-watching, and enjoying the vibrant atmosphere.
