Mariska Hargitay to Make History as Host of the 78th Emmy Awards

The 78th Emmy Awards will be hosted by Mariska Hargitay, known for her role in "Law & Order: SVU." She will be the first woman to host the Emmys in 15 years. The ceremony will take place on September 14 at L.A. Live's Peacock Theater and will be broadcast live on NBC and Peacock. Hargitay expressed her excitement about hosting and celebrating the storytelling community in television.

NBC and the Television Academy have chosen Hargitay as the host, deviating from the usual standup comedians or late-night hosts. This decision aligns with NBC's 100th-anniversary celebrations. Hargitay is only the fourth female Emmy host this century, following Ellen DeGeneres, Heidi Klum, and Jane Lynch. NBC's Jen Neal praised Hargitay's impact on television and her iconic status.

Hargitay has a history with the Emmy Awards, having won the outstanding lead drama actress Emmy in 2006 for her role in "SVU." She has been nominated multiple times and has also won a News and Documentary Emmy for her work as a producer. Hargitay's long-standing role as Capt. Olivia Benson on "SVU" has earned her a Golden Globe and multiple SAG-AFTRA Actor Awards nominations.

In addition to her television work, Hargitay recently concluded her Broadway debut and released a personal documentary about her mother, Jayne Mansfield. Her hosting of the Emmys adds to her successful year, which also included the New York Knicks' NBA championship win. Hargitay will collaborate with Jesse Collins Entertainment, the producer of the Emmys telecast for the fourth consecutive year.

The nominations for the 78th Emmy Awards will be announced on July 8, with the Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremonies scheduled for September 5 and 6. Hargitay's hosting of the Emmys is anticipated to be a memorable evening honoring the best of television.
