Grateful Dead Reimagined: A Musical Journey with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and Crazy Fingers

This summer, embark on a unique musical journey with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and Crazy Fingers on July 17 at 7:30 PM. The Music of The Grateful Dead concert will feature beloved songs like “Sugar Magnolia,” “Stella Blue,” “Touch of Grey,” and “Truckin’,” reimagined by a live tribute band and enhanced by the BPO's power and artistry. The historic connection between the Grateful Dead and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra at Kleinhans Music Hall adds a special resonance to the program. In 1970, the Grateful Dead performed at Kleinhans in a benefit concert for the BPO and jammed with the orchestra on stage, creating a legendary moment in Buffalo music history.

Travis Estes, BPO Vice President of Marketing & Communications and a self-proclaimed Deadhead, finds inspiration in this legacy. Bringing the Grateful Dead's music back to Kleinhans with the BPO is not just a concert idea but a way to connect to a remarkable moment in the hall's history. The concert offers a rare opportunity to hear familiar songs transformed by a full orchestra while staying true to the spirit of the Grateful Dead. The rock-and-orchestra collaboration aims to attract audiences who may not typically attend symphony concerts, offering a fresh perspective on the band's diverse musical influences.

The concert arrangements are crafted by Bradley Thachuk and Steven Thachuk of Gravel Museum Music, a production company specializing in rock-orchestra performances. Paul Ill, the bassist from Crazy Fingers, is involved in Gravel Museum Music's rock-orchestra projects. The event extends beyond the performance itself, creating a festival-like atmosphere with a pre-show gathering, local vendors, live music, and a communal vibe. The Shakedown Market at Kleinhans will feature local artisans, vintage items, jewelry, vinyl records, and live music before becoming part of the ticketed experience during intermission.

Aaron Ziolkowski, a multi-instrumentalist from Western New York, will provide live music at the event, adding to the vibrant atmosphere. The Cheesy Chick food truck will serve grilled cheese, reminiscent of the classic Dead concert scene, creating a nostalgic touch for attendees. Buffalo artist Gregory Meadows has designed a limited-edition show poster for the concert, emphasizing the unique and local aspect of the event. The Music of The Grateful Dead is not just a concert; it is a celebration of a musical legacy that embodies movement, improvisation, community, and connection. Join the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and Crazy Fingers for a night that honors the spirit of The Dead and welcomes new voices to the journey.
