Musical Showdown: Lin-Manuel Miranda vs. Taylor Swift for Best Original Song at the Oscars

Could Lin-Manuel Miranda and Taylor Swift be vying for the Best Original Song award at the upcoming Academy Awards? Miranda recently composed a new song called “Along the Way” for the live-action remake of Moana, which is set to hit theaters shortly after the release of Toy Story 5, featuring Swift’s song “I Knew It, I Knew You.” Miranda expressed admiration for Swift's work on Toy Story 5 and emphasized the importance of creating authentic songs for film characters rather than focusing on awards like the Oscars.

Miranda, known for his music and songs in Disney's original Moana, earned his first Oscar nomination in 2017 for the song “How Far I’ll Go.” Although he did not contribute to the 2024 Moana sequel, he returned for the live-action adaptation to craft “Along the Way,” performed by Catherine Laga’aia, Dwayne Johnson, and Auli’i Cravalho. Cravalho, who starred in the original Moana, also serves as an executive producer for the new film.

Miranda shared that his children's positive reaction to “Along the Way” confirmed its appeal, as they began singing the song independently. Swift, on the other hand, revealed on Instagram that she wrote “I Knew It, I Knew You” immediately after watching an early cut of Toy Story 5, drawing inspiration from the character Jessie. The song marked Swift's first release since her album The Life of a Showgirl and garnered significant attention upon its debut.

With Moana currently in theaters and Toy Story 5 already captivating audiences, the competition for Best Original Song at the Academy Awards could be fierce between Miranda and Swift. Both artists have showcased their songwriting talents in these highly anticipated films, setting the stage for a potential showdown at the prestigious awards ceremony.
