Unveiling the Making of Marie Antoinette: Sofia Coppola's Intimate Documentary

Mubi has acquired the global rights to Making Marie Antoinette, a documentary directed by Sofia Coppola's late mother, Eleanor Coppola. The film offers a behind-the-scenes look at the making of Sofia Coppola's 2006 costume drama, Marie Antoinette, starring Kirsten Dunst. The documentary was crafted from over 80 hours of footage shot by Eleanor on the set of her daughter's film, which also featured Jason Schwartzman, Judy Davis, Rose Byrne, and Jamie Dornan in his debut role. Sofia Coppola expressed her emotional connection to the project, as she and her mother worked on the footage together during lockdown.

The documentary was produced by Sofia Coppola, Lorenzo Mieli, Mario Gianani, Rachel Dengiz, and Youree Henley. The editing was done by Aaron Matthews with the assistance of Eleanor's friends Davia Nelson and Liz Bird. The film was financed by Our Films and Entourage Pictures, owned by Mediawan. Mubi's founder, Efe Cakarel, praised Sofia Coppola's unique filmmaking style and expressed pride in bringing this intimate portrait of the production of Marie Antoinette to audiences worldwide.

Mubi previously released Sofia Coppola's biopic Priscilla in various international markets. The streaming platform will reveal its release strategy for Making Marie Antoinette soon.
