2026 Detroit Lions EDGE Position Preview: Hutchinson Leads a Talented Group
Aidan Hutchinson, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft, has established himself as a top EDGE defender in the league. With impressive sack numbers and a high overall grade from Pro Football Focus, Hutchinson will lead the Lions' EDGE position group in the upcoming 2026 season. Joining him are offseason acquisitions D.J. Wonnum and Derrick Moore, who will serve as his primary pass-rush counterparts.
Wonnum, previously with the Carolina Panthers, brings physicality and run-stopping ability to the Lions' defense. Despite modest pass-rush stats, he adds depth to the EDGE position. On the other hand, Moore, a standout from the University of Michigan, has shown steady improvement throughout his college career, culminating in a strong senior season with 10 sacks and multiple defensive contributions.
The competition for the starting EDGE position opposite Hutchinson will likely be between Wonnum and Moore during training camp. While Wonnum may have the edge initially, Moore is expected to challenge for playing time as the season progresses. The final spot in the Lions' EDGE room could be contested between Payton Turner and Tyre West. Turner, a former first-round pick, is looking to revitalize his career in Detroit after a lackluster start. West, a late-round draft pick, will need to impress in training camp to secure a role in the rotation.
