Florida Governor Candidates Debate Education Plans at Central Florida Event

Candidates for Florida's governorship gathered at a Central Florida event to discuss their plans for education. Former U.S. Congressman David Jolly, the Democratic frontrunner, and Republicans Paul Renner and James Fishback all pledged to increase teacher salaries if elected. Florida currently ranks last in average teacher pay nationwide. The candidates also addressed issues such as the universal voucher program, high-stakes testing, literacy skills, and school budgets during the event at the Omni Orlando Resort at ChampionsGate.

Jolly proposed a 10-year plan to revitalize education in Florida, which includes a 30% pay raise for teachers funded by tourist-development taxes. He criticized the current voucher program and called for reforms to make it means-tested. Renner emphasized the importance of teacher retention and improving student literacy, while Fishback advocated for a 25% raise for teachers and ensuring public schools have adequate resources and security.

During the event, audience members questioned Fishback about past controversial remarks, but he did not directly address the issue. Congressman Byron Donalds, the Republican frontrunner, expressed support for the voucher program and proposed a "universal scorecard" to provide parents with data on educational outcomes at all schools. Currently, Florida only reports data for public schools, not private schools that receive state-funded tuition vouchers.
