Security Measures Enhanced: Lessons Learned from Pokémon Card Store Robbery in Quebec

An armed robbery took place at a Pokémon card store in the Lanaudière region of Quebec recently. Surveillance footage captured a man brandishing a gun at the store owner and customers, causing shock among those present. The incident occurred on June 18th at the MissingNo. store in Saint-Alexis, located about 60 kilometers northeast of Montreal. The perpetrator, seeking valuable collectibles rather than cash, filled a hockey bag with approximately $30,000 worth of merchandise before fleeing the scene.

Co-owners Jean-Francois Hetu and Charles Breault Pariseau took action to prevent the robber from escaping easily. They pursued the criminal with baseball bats, damaging his car's taillights and passenger-side window as he drove away. Their quick thinking led to the arrest of Dany El-Aawar a few hours later. El-Aawar faces charges related to the robbery at the Pokémon card store and other robberies dating back to April. Despite the arrest, the stolen merchandise was not recovered, as El-Aawar had already passed it on to another individual.

Following the traumatic incident, security measures at MissingNo. have been significantly enhanced. Customers now need to buzz to gain entry, and a button behind the counter unlocks the front door. The store is equipped with additional security cameras covering every corner. The installation of bars two years ago was a proactive measure due to the rising value of Pokémon cards. Hetu and Breault Pariseau are sharing their experience as a cautionary tale for others in the industry, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing customer safety and implementing adequate security measures.

The owners urge fellow businesses to take precautions and ensure the safety of their customers in light of the robbery. Hetu emphasized the need for vigilance and protection in the current environment, highlighting the potential risks faced by businesses in the industry. Reflecting on the incident, Hetu acknowledged the gravity of the situation and the importance of being prepared for unforeseen threats.
