Oklahoma Turnpike Authority Board Approves $75.4 Million Interchange Project and Bridge Rehabilitation Contract

The Oklahoma Turnpike Authority Board has approved a $75.4 million contract to construct a new interchange linking I-44, the Toby Keith Expressway, and SH-37 near Newcastle. This interchange is part of the ongoing effort to complete the alignment of the new turnpike between I-44 and I-35. The Board also addressed other matters, including finalizing a law enforcement agreement with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol and awarding a construction contract for bridge work in Pawnee County.
The winning bid for the interchange project was presented by OTA Director of Engineering Darian Butler. The contract was awarded to a joint venture between Allen and Shell, coming in below the engineer's estimate. The project involves building new bridges, ramps, service roads, and mainline construction to connect I-44, 24th Street, and SH-37. This is one of several contracts awarded as part of the effort to complete the Toby Keith Expressway.
In addition to the interchange project, a contract worth nearly $2.85 million was awarded to Paradigm Construction to rehabilitate a US-412/Cimarron Turnpike bridge in Pawnee County. This project includes replacing the concrete deck, parapets, beams, and bearing assemblies of the bridge.
The Board also took a moment to remember two transportation workers who lost their lives recently. OTA Executive Director Joe Echelle emphasized the importance of safety in work zones and urged drivers to slow down and move over when passing through these areas. The Board also discussed the enforcement of traffic laws on the turnpike system and authorized a new agreement with the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety to cover patrol costs.
Overall, the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority continues to make progress on various construction projects and maintenance efforts to improve the state's transportation infrastructure. The public is encouraged to stay informed about ongoing projects and provide feedback on planned developments through virtual meetings and other communication channels. As traffic on the turnpike system continues to increase, motorists are reminded to prioritize safety, use PIKEPASS for toll payments, and stay updated on real-time travel conditions before embarking on their journeys.
