In the early 1980s, Def Leppard was riding high on the success of their album Pyromania, featuring hits like "Rock of Ages" and "Foolin'." The band was gearing up to record a new album in 1985, but faced challenges along the way. Initially working with producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange, they later switched to Nigel Green after Lange's departure. However, tragedy struck on December 31, 1984, when drummer Rick Allen was involved in a life-threatening car accident that resulted in the loss of his left arm.

Despite the devastating accident, Allen was determined to continue playing music. With a specially designed electric drum kit, he relearned how to play with one arm. The band resumed recording with Lange, who reworked the tracks previously produced by Green. The album, titled Hysteria, was released on August 3, 1987, and became a massive success, earning 12x platinum certification and producing several chart-topping hits.

Hysteria solidified Def Leppard's place in music history, with singer Joe Elliott acknowledging its significance in the band's career. The album's success, with six top 20-charting singles and an impressive 78 weeks in the top 10 of the Billboard 200 chart, cemented Def Leppard's status as rock legends.
