Def Leppard Embraces Queen's Collaborative Songwriting Approach for Upcoming Album
Def Leppard has adopted Queen's collaborative songwriting approach for their upcoming album, set to be released in early 2027. Guitarist Phil Collen shared that the band members now contribute ideas to each other's tracks instead of working individually. This change was inspired by Queen's method of collective input on songs like "Another One Bites the Dust."
The band's recording process has been transformed by this new approach. Bassist Rick Savage dedicated 12 hours to playing a Martin 12-string acoustic guitar until his fingers bled while working on a piece called "This Guitar." Collen highlighted how Queen would have each member contribute to songs, resulting in a unique sound that bore the band's signature mark.
Def Leppard laid down approximately 18 tracks for the upcoming album, from which they will choose 10 or 11 for the final release. Frontman Joe Elliott teased that the album will feature their fastest track ever written, showcasing a diverse range of musical styles.
The band released a single titled "Rejoice" during their Las Vegas residency at Caesars Palace and recorded parts of the album in a basement studio beneath the casino during their February shows. Despite their busy touring schedule, recording sessions continued through the summer, with Collen mentioning that he was working on tracks even while on the road.
Def Leppard's previous album, Diamond Star Halos, was created during the COVID-19 pandemic, with Collen and Elliott collaborating remotely by exchanging files. Guitarist Vivian Campbell revealed that the band has enough material for two full albums but has decided to focus on releasing a single, comprehensive collection.
