Jetstar Introduces New Carry-On Baggage Policy with Priority Access Option
Jetstar is implementing changes to its carry-on baggage policy for economy-class passengers. Starting in February, passengers will be limited to one single carry-on bag, with the option to pay for priority access to overhead bins. The new fees for priority carry-on access will range from $25 to $52 on selected flights, allowing passengers to board the plane first.
Passengers who do not pay for priority access will still have access to the overhead bins but will board after those who have paid for the service. The weight allowance for the single carry-on bag has been increased to 10 kilograms, up from the previous limit of seven kilograms. Passengers will be required to store their free item under the seat in front of them.
Jetstar's decision to charge for carry-on storage is inspired by European budget carriers like easyJet and Ryanair, who generate significant revenue from ancillary fees. The airline aims to streamline boarding processes and improve on-time departures by enforcing the new carry-on rules.
Existing bookings with two carry-on items for flights departing before February 2, 2027, will not be affected by the changes. However, for flights departing after that date, passengers on those fares will have the option to purchase priority carry-on access. Jetstar's focus on improving boarding times comes after the airline ranked lowest for on-time departures in June 2026.
Jetstar's parent company, Qantas, has benefited from the success of Jetstar's domestic network, which delivered strong pre-tax earnings and ancillary revenue in 2025.
