Love & Other Mysteries: The Collaborative Album by William Shatner and Brad Paisley
William Shatner and Brad Paisley have collaborated on a new spoken-word album titled Love & Other Mysteries, set to be released on August 21 through Loaded Goat Records and UMG. The album features 15 tracks that combine Shatner's original writing with musical arrangements by Paisley, Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes, and pianist Gordon Mote, with production by Paisley and Luke Wooten. The first track, "The Great Mystery," is already available for listeners.
Due to the 2025 wildfires in California, the recording of the album had to be moved from Shatner's home state to Paisley's studio in Nashville, Tennessee. Paisley prepared for Shatner's arrival by setting up an additional vocal booth, and the majority of the album was recorded in a single marathon session with a live band accompanying Shatner's vocals.
Paisley shared that Shatner approached him with the songs, describing them as a personal statement about life. Paisley expressed his excitement about working with Shatner, highlighting the unexpected and innovative nature of their collaboration. The musical arrangements for the album blend spoken-word with elements of rock, country, and jazz, creating a unique and inspirational sound.
After hearing the final recordings, Paisley was impressed by the outcome, describing it as a surprising success. He expressed pride in the project, considering it to be their best work together and likening it to Shatner's musical memoir. Shatner himself emphasized the personal significance of the project, stating that the songs and poetry serve as a creative outlet that has been life-changing for him.
In addition to the album, Shatner, who is 95 years old, is involved in various other projects. He and his daughter have launched a wellness podcast called No Time But Now, inspired by their shared experiences battling stage 4 cancer. Shatner is also working on a heavy-metal album featuring prominent musicians like Rob Halford and John Moyer, which will be debuted live at Riot Fest in Chicago on September 18-20. The Love & Other Mysteries album represents a significant creative endeavor for Shatner and Paisley, showcasing their unique collaboration and musical talents.
