Two prominent foundations, led by Leonardo DiCaprio and Jeff Bezos, have initiated a groundbreaking project with a commitment of $200 million to save 100 of the most endangered species on Earth. The Phoenix Species Project, spearheaded by DiCaprio's Re:wild and the Bezos Earth Fund, aims to provide crucial support to species like lemurs, salamanders, pangolins, pigs, and echidnas facing extinction due to climate change.
Leonardo DiCaprio, along with Re:wild's CEO Wes Sechrest, collaborated with Jeff Bezos and his wife Lauren Sánchez Bezos to launch this ambitious conservation effort. The project emerged from discussions with local governments, environmental organizations, and Indigenous communities to address the urgent need to protect vulnerable species and their habitats.
The initiative targets a diverse range of animals, including the golden-crowned sifaka lemur, the Hickory Nut Gorge green salamander, the Visayan warty pig, the Cozumel harvest mouse, the pink land iguana, the Malayan pangolin, the pancake tortoise, the starry night harlequin toad, and Attenborough’s long-beaked echidna. These species are at risk of disappearing without immediate intervention.
