South Korean Students Detained for Trespassing at U.S. Air Base in Seoul: A Complex Incident
A group of South Korean students were detained for allegedly trespassing into a U.S. air base in South Korea. The incident occurred at Osan Air Base near Seoul, where four male and four female students were apprehended by U.S. military personnel and later handed over to South Korean authorities. The students invoked their right to remain silent during questioning and were accused of shouting anti-U.S. slogans, including "Let’s smash U.S. 7th Air Force."
The students are currently under investigation for violating laws protecting military installations in South Korea. The U.S. military emphasized that unauthorized attempts to access their installations are taken very seriously and that the incident will be addressed in accordance with relevant laws and procedures. The Korean Progressive University Student Union claimed that the detained students were protesting the U.S. military's opposition to a South Korean semiconductor cluster project, but this statement was not acknowledged by the U.S. military.

The presence of approximately 28,500 U.S. troops in South Korea aims to deter potential aggression from North Korea, a result of the Korean War. In a separate incident in 2019, South Korean police arrested four students who broke into the U.S. ambassador’s residence in Seoul to protest the Trump administration's demands for increased financial contributions to cover the costs of U.S. troops in South Korea. The recent detention of the students at Osan Air Base adds to the ongoing complexities surrounding the U.S.-South Korean military relationship and the sentiments it evokes among the South Korean population.
