Rock legend Bruce Springsteen donated $20,000 to the families of striking miners in 1985 during a concert in Newcastle. The singer invited women from support groups backstage and handed over the cheque to help mining communities in the North East. Springsteen, whose parents were working class, felt it was a good thing to do after following news coverage of the strike. The donation was a surprise to the recipients, who described Springsteen as a hero for his genuine gesture. The story will be featured in a BBC documentary titled "When Bruce Springsteen Came to Britain."
