55-year-old U.S. Army veteran Sae Joon Park, a green card holder, self-deported to South Korea after facing a removal order due to past drug-related charges and untreated PTSD. Park's struggles with addiction and legal issues stemmed from his untreated PTSD following his service in the U.S. Army. Despite his honorable discharge and Purple Heart, Park's noncitizen status and criminal record prevented him from naturalization or relief from deportation. After spending time in prison and raising his children in Hawaii, Park was warned by ICE officials that he would be detained and deported unless he left voluntarily, leading to his departure from the U.S. and leaving behind the country he fought for.
