The Department of Defense is expanding a militarized zone along the southern U.S. border where troops can detain individuals for possible federal prosecution on charges of trespassing in a national defense area. The Air Force has annexed a 250-mile stretch of the border in Texas, treating it as an extension of Joint Base San Antonio. The newly designated area along the Rio Grande will have warning signs installed immediately to prevent entry. Military responsibilities include enhanced detection and monitoring, as well as temporarily detaining trespassers until they are transferred to law enforcement authorities. Arrests for illegal entry at the border have significantly decreased this year.
