Europe's top human rights court ruled that Russia violated international law in Ukraine, marking the first time an international court has held Moscow accountable for human rights abuses since the 2022 invasion. The court also found Russia responsible for the downing of Flight MH17, a tragedy that claimed 298 lives in 2014, including ten British victims. Families of the MH17 victims view the ruling as a significant step towards justice after an 11-year quest for accountability. The ECHR's decision comes amid escalating tensions, with Ukraine reporting a record number of drones and missiles fired by Russia in the ongoing conflict. Ukraine's air defences successfully intercepted many of the drones and missiles, underscoring the ongoing challenges faced in the region.
